Mobile Library
The aim of our mobile library programme is introducing children to the joy of reading, the love of books. Light and fun, easy-to-read books are delivered to kindergartens and elementary schools, which are adjusted to the childrens’ individual interests and reading skills. Thus we help children experience the diversity of books through contemporary juvenile fiction, classic children’s books, picture books and various non-fiction.
Nurseries and schools participating in our programme are situated far from our headquarters, and the children living in those areas have less opportunities to use our library’s Children’s Section, without the help of an adult. This is why we consider our programme important: we focus on helping these children realize that reading can be a source of joy and entertainment. Our main aim however is making these children become regular users of the library, as well as suggesting them to use the library’s various opportunities (cultural events, holiday programmes, afternoon activities).
In this bi-weekly programme our librarians carry boxes of books to kindergartens and/or elementary schools, of which children are free to choose. Naturally, we provide books that are able to help learning, as well as teaching, based on previous agreement with the pedagogue.
A temporary library is formed in the class by the books lent for two weeks. The books must be kept in the school / classroom, within the group, as they cannot be taken home, and, thus, the pupils are able to enjoy them at breaks or at specific times designated by the teacher.
The teacher takes responsibility of providing 30 minutes of their lesson with a bi-weekly periodicity for the loans and the librarian’s readings, and of providing regular opportunities for the children to use their books. This would then manifest in the occasional presentation of a chosen book by a pupil, and of regular creative journaling about the chosen books.
The kindergarten or school takes the responsibility of the classes’ visit to the library headquarters or the branch library twice a year, in order to introduce the children to the institution, as well as for registration and loans. It is a well-known fact that good readers with a passion for reading perform better in their studies. We are hopeful that a child, whom loves tales, children’s novels and, in general, books, is always going to be fascinated by the wonder of letters turning into exciting stories.
Periodically, we also deliver books for the elderly and/or physically disabled, based on an application by phone (0267–351–609).
